What to do How to do it
1 Shut down the laser system.
  1. Turn off the power source.
2 Provide medical assistance.
  1. Eye injuries:
    • Keep the injured person's head upright and still to restrict any bleeding in the eye.
    • Immediately contact Shiley Eye Center at (858) 534-6290 and follow their instructions.
    • After business hours, contact the emergency room:
      • On campus:
        Thornton Hospital Emergency/ Urgent Care Unit, (858) 657-7600
      • Medical Center at Hillcrest:
        Emergency room, (619) 543-6400
    Non-eye injuries
3 Contact UCSD Police for assistance if necessary.
  1. From a land line: Dial 9-1-1
    From a cell phone: (858) 534-4357 (534-HELP)
4 Report the accident as soon as possible.
  1. Report to:
    • Environment, Health and Safety, (858) 534-6138
    • Your principal investigator
    • Your Area Safety Coordinator
  2. Preserve the accident scene for investigation by the Laser Safety Officer.
5 File a Workers' Compensation claim.
  1. Notify the Workers' Compensation Office within one business day after the accident. Call:
    • UCSD Risk Management, (858) 534-0136 or (858) 822-2979
