Information Interviews and Outreach Partners Program
|
|
| |
|
Summary: Find out how information interviews and the Outreach Partners Program can help you clarify and achieve your career goals. |
|
Information interviews and Human Resources: Information interviews help employees and external job applicants seek support from Human Resources (HR) to find career opportunities in other departments and learn new job skills. In these one-on-one or telephone interviews, HR representatives provide information about:
- Job searches
- Career opportunities in other departments
- Skills needed to qualify for new positions
- Writing effective resumes and applications
- Preparing for interviews
After an information interview with an HR representative, the job-seeker can participate in the Outreach Partners Program.
Information interviews and the Outreach Partners Program (OPP): The OPP recruits information-providers in each vice-chancellor area. These providers then conduct interviews with job-seekers to share information about career opportunities in their areas. OPP information interviews allow:
- Current employees to explore career advancement opportunities
- External applicants to discover job opportunities and the workplace culture within UCSD departments
Role of the job-seeker: The employee or external job applicant has two roles in an information interview:
- Share information about personal and professional background. Job-seekers should be prepared to answer questions in areas that include:
- Educational background
- Job or career background
- Experience working as part of a team
- Professional accomplishments
- Handling difficult situations
- What they would like to get out of their next position
- What they have to offer the organization
- Learn more about the information-provider's department and profession. The job-seeker has an opportunity to ask questions about topics that include:
- The information-provider's professional background
- What it's like to work in the provider's profession and department
- Skills that are important in this profession and department
Role of the information-provider: Information-providers are a diverse group of key employees who have volunteered their time to identify potential candidates for various positions. An information-provider has two goals:
- Share information about the department
- Evaluate the job-seeker's potential as a candidate for present or future positions
