Diversity Overview

Summary: Through policies, procedures, and programs, UCSD strives to create a workplace environment in which employees with many differences communicate and work together effectively.

A definition of diversity: Diversity is a characteristic of organizations whose employees have many differences in areas that include but are not limited to race, gender, culture, language, national origin, religion, age, abilities, and sexual orientation.

Diversity at UCSD: During the last 10 years, the UCSD workforce has become steadily more diverse, just as the community around us has become more diverse. In 1998, then-Chancellor Robert C. Dynes established the Diversity Council and also issued the UCSD Principles of Community, which provide a framework of values that support diversity.

Administrative responsibilities for diversity: Associate Chancellor Jorge Huerta is the chief diversity officer at UCSD. Other administrators with specific responsibilities for diversity include the Vice Chancellor-Business Affairs, the Assistant Vice Chancellor-Human Resources, the Director of Human Resources for Equal Opportunity/ Staff Affirmative Action, and all department heads, supervisors, and managers.

Individual responsibilities for diversity: The relationships among UCSD staff, faculty, and students are the University’s most important resource in promoting and sustaining diversity. All employees are encouraged to:

  • Promote inclusiveness
  • Value differences
  • Avoid actions or behaviors that offend, demean, or exclude

Cultivating diversity: UCSD supports a variety of diversity resources, staff education programs, employee services, and staff associations to increase diversity.

If you need more information: Contact Equal Opportunity/Staff Affirmative Action , (858) 534-3694.
