If someone known to be allergic to bees is stung, or if a person is stung multiple times, call 911 immediately. From cell phones and public phones, dial (858) 534-4357 (534-HELP) for the UCSD Police dispatcher.
| Bees sting only when disturbed or threatened. Avoid wearing perfumes and brightly colored or sweaty clothing when around bees, all of which attract their attention.
Use the tips below if bees are swarming or indoors.
|
 |
If bees are swarming in large numbers:
- Remain calm and move out of the area slowly.
- Slowly and carefully brush off any insects that land on you or wait until they fly away. Do not hit at or "shoo" insects away.
If a bee, wasp, hornet, or yellow jacket is indoors, you can remove it. If you are hypersensitive to wasp or bee stings, use extreme caution or ask for assistance. Use the method you feel most comfortable with:
- Place a jar over the insect and slip a piece of heavy paper (or several sheets of paper) under the jar to trap the bee inside. Transport the bee outside, point the jar opening away from your body, and release it carefully.
- Use a vacuum to capture the insect, and dispose of the bag in an outside trashcan or open the bag outside with extreme care.
- Use a newspaper or other object and strike swiftly. Without touching the insect, use a paper towel to collect the insect and put it in the trash.
- Use a pesticide-free spray to kill the insect. Marketplace Preview carries Victor Poison-Free (stock # 5041), the only spray recommended for use at UCSD.
If you find a hive or if a swarm of bees doesn't move on within a few days, request pest management help. Don't attempt to spray a swarm or hive. The only way to get rid of a colony is to request assistance from trained professionals.
