Workers' Compensation

Summary: Learn how to access and understand UCSD's Workers' Compensation Program.

Are you in the right place? If you have a non-work-related injury or you are not a UCSD campus employee or registered volunteer (see Eligibility below), refer to Benefits or Student Health Services.

California's Workers' Compensation laws require UCSD to provide workers' compensation benefits to employees who are injured or who develop a job-related illness as a result of their employment. These laws determine who is eligible for benefits, when benefits begin, and what benefits are provided.

Select a topic for more information:

Eligibility for UCSD workers' compensation benefits, according to California Labor Code, is as follows:

  • All persons serving the University as employees or registered volunteers qualify for workers' compensation coverage through UCSD. Students (other than student employees) and employees of outside agencies do not qualify, even though the claimed injury may have occurred at UCSD.
  • An employer's liability for the provision of workers' compensation benefits exists for any injury arising out of and in the course of the employment.

Coverage: If you have a work-related injury or illness, Workers' Compensation pays your medical bills and provides compensation to help replace your lost income until you can return to work. Potential benefits are:

  • Medical care to cure or relieve the effects of the industrial injury
  • Temporary disability payments to help replace lost wages
  • Permanent disability payments to compensate for a permanent disability
  • Supplemental job displacement voucher if you are unable to return to work at UCSD
  • Death benefit payments to dependents

Transitional Return to Work Program: The WC Transitional Return to Work Program returns employees to work following an occupational injury or illness as soon as possible. Transitional return to work assignments allow employees with temporary, partial disabilities to transition back to work in a modified, alternative, or reduced-hours capacity for a defined period of time.

  • Read the Transitional Return to Work Program Guidelines for more information. (PDF) (Word file)
  • Contact David Morgan, Transitional Return to Work coordinator, (858) 822-6677.
