UCSD has a Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) in place to protect everyone at UCSD from unnecessary and potentially harmful chemical exposure. It has 2 parts:
- General Chemical Safety Guidelines
- Laboratory and Chemical Safety
The CHP describes institutional and employee responsibilities and provides:
- Requirements for safety training, communication strategies, facility requirements
- Operational standards for safe handling, storage, and use of hazardous chemicals in research and non-research areas of UCSD
Chemical hazards covered in the CHP include but are not limited to:
- Anesthetic gases
- Cleaning agents
- Compressed gases
- Controlled substances
- Cryogenic liquids
- Flammable and combustible liquids
- Highly toxic agents
- Known and suspected human carcinogens
- Organic peroxide forming materials
- Organic solvents
- Petroleum products
- Other hazardous chemicals
Institutional and individual responsibilities:
- Principal investigators (PIs), managers, and supervisors are responsible for implementing the health, safety, and environmental management policies and practices on the Blink Laboratory and Chemical Safety page, and within the Administrative Responsibilities Handbook, as the program relates to operations under their control.
- Every individual working with chemical hazards at UCSD is responsible and accountable for ensuring his or her activities are performed safely and in accordance with current polices and guidelines.
- UCSD's Chemical Safety & Surveillance Committee (CSSC) oversees use of chemical agents in UCSD facilities. CSSC activities are guided by university policy, national guidelines, industry standards, and federal, state, and county regulations.
- The committee is charged to:
- Advise the chancellor on all matters relating to the safe use of hazardous chemicals
- Reduce risks associated with hazardous chemicals
- Establish and implement policies and procedures for chemical safety
- Impose disciplinary measures for willful or negligent violations of UCSD's established chemical safety practices and procedures
