Staff in Memoriam: Glen Bowers

Glen Bowers
Programmer Analyst
Administrative Computing and Telecommunications (ACT)

Years of service at UCSD: 10

Glen Lee Bowers, a native of West Virginia who loved his job, his dog, his pickup truck, and country and doo-wop music, died April 22, 2007, of prostate cancer. He was a programmer analylst for the Data Center in Administrative Computing and Telecommunications (ACT).

After serving in the U.S. Navy, Glen moved to Alaska and earned AA degrees in police administration and social sciences. While working at the Veterans Administration regional office, he met his future wife, Kathy Shepherd, who works for UCSD Medical Center Radiology Department as coordinator of residency and accredited fellowhip programs. They moved to San Diego in 1985, and Glen earned his certification in computer information science from Coleman College. Glen and Kathy celebrated their 20th anniversary 2 years ago in Washington, D.C.

"Always ready to share a story — or two, or three — Glen loved to talk about his wife and what he was doing on his vacations," noted Charlotte Klock, director of the ACT Data Center and Glen's supervisor.

"Glen was dedicated to making sure the work got done with quality and on time," said Klock. And, in spite of his illness, "he always tried to maintain his sense of humor and helpfulness."

"He was a friend first and foremost and will be missed by those he touched."

The family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
