UCSD has implemented sustainable building practices by:
- Training Facilities Design & Construction and Facilities Management project managers as LEED-accredited design professionals
- Incorporating sustainable design costs into project budgets
- Requiring organizations submitting bid proposals to demonstrate expertise in sustainable building practices
- Awarding contracts to experienced sustainability design professionals
- Adopting an integrated design approach including eco-charette
- Maintaining Green Building Baseline Scorecards on all new buildings
- Developing letter templates to verify achievement of Green Building points
- Updating master specifications to include sustainability language
- Participating in San Diego Gas & Electric's Savings by Design program
- Developing building commissioning procedures that ensure all campus facilities are planned, designed, and constructed as high-quality, resource-efficient facilities
UCSD applies several best practices to all new construction projects. Design teams:
- Begin with the goal of constructing a "high-performance building"
- Factor into building designs environmental issues that affect UCSD (e.g., fog, airborne salt and particles, Santa Ana conditions, solar loads)
- Establish incentives to be achieved prior to the start of construction
- Use integrated performance-based assessment to measure achievement of established incentives
- Apply earned financial incentives to building budgets to help offset the cost of efficiency measures
