NGN2, the second phase of the Next Generation Network, began July 1, 2006, and extends to June 30, 2011. Under NGN2, rates will increase to cover the addition of wireless services, staff, and equipment needed for network security and domestic long distance.
NGN is funded by billing for voice and data services with a flat and equitable monthly access charge for each Communication User and lower rates for off-campus users. (To find out who qualifies as a Communication User and other billing information, see NGN Communications Access Billing.)
NGN provides enhanced communication services and technology, including:
- Faster data connections and increased Internet bandwidth
- Sustainable state-of-the-art technology
- Expanded help desk services
- Better network security
- Increased network services
- Resources for network repairs and upgrades
- Wireless equipment and services
- E-mail, active directory, and other network services
Significant changes under NGN2:
- Increased rates over time, so that subsidies currently provided by the vice chancellors will be eliminated. For more information on billing and a chart of the new access fees, see NGN Communications Access Billing.
- Unlimited domestic long-distance charges (local, intrastate and interstate), which currently appear separately on the monthly Telecommunications Recharge statements, will be part of the NGN2 rates.
- Charges for Med Center, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and off-campus customers will increase at different percentages from on-campus rates:
- Off-campus rates will include costs for the communication line from the off-campus site back to the main campus network.
- Postdoctoral fellow rates will increase from 33% of a standard Communications User to 40% in the first year, and by an additional 5% each succeeding year.
- Graduate student rates, charged to the academic vice chancellors as an element of instruction, will be raised from 20% to 30% of a standard Communications User because of a significant increase in data use.
Campus NGN coverage is illustrated on campus maps, which also show areas scheduled to be covered in the future.
