Coeus is UCSD’s integrated proposal and award system. It is linked with IFIS, ISIS, the Chart of Accounts database, and FinancialLink reporting.
Background: The Sponsored Project Excellence Achieved through Redesign (SPEAR) program initiated and coordinated the Coeus implementation with input from:
- Office of Contract and Grant Administrations (OCGA)
- Office of Post Award Financial Services (OPAFS)
- Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO)
- School of Medicine (SOM) and Clinical Trials Office (CCTO)
Prior to the Coeus implementation, each of these administrative departments developed, supported, and maintained their own information systems.
How Coeus works: In 1999, UCSD began customizing MIT’s base version of Coeus. The production system feeds funded-award information into UCSD's primary financial systems, IFIS and ISIS.
Coeus teams:
- Coeus Advisory Group (formerly called the Coeus Team): Oversaw Coeus implementation, oversees various Coeus teams' efforts, and determines future operational needs
- Coeus Award Data Coordination (CADC) Team: Defined issues, discussed and resolved them, effected process and system changes, and documented changes
Next phase: In July 2004, MIT released a beta version of Coeus 4.0, which uses a Java-based architecture. UCSD has adopted the SPEAR Team's recommendation to upgrade Coeus to Java (PDF), and the team is now gathering requirements and coding for the various Coeus modules. See the Coeus 4 project site.
