ACT maintains a central registry of electronic mailnames, so UCSD affiliates can have a simple, official, "@UCSD" address such as gbluefin@ucsd.edu. When mail addressed in that manner is received by the UCSD mail gateway, the registry is consulted and the message is delivered to the account and mail server specified as the (mailbox) destination for the addressee.
That destination might be on a department mail server, the ACT "popmail" server, sdcc12, or an off-campus ISP mail server.
If you obtain an e-mail account from your department, the department should register a mailname for you.
If you obtain a free Popmail account from ACT, your @UCSD mailname will be automatically registered as your popmail account name.
You can also create an @ucsd address for yourself by following the instructions provided by ACT.
Questions? E-mail the UCSD Postmaster, or call the ACT Help Desk, (858) 534-1853.
