Managing Sponsored Project Funds: Federal Flow-Through Funds

Summary: If you manage sponsored project awards, find out what you need to know about federal flow-through funds.

Federal flow-through funds are awards to UCSD from the state of California, city and county government entities, and other non-federal agencies that are funded, in total or in part, by federal agencies.

As a sub-recipient of these awards, UCSD must follow federal quidelines, as well as award guidelines, in administering these funds.

Example: Johns Hopkins University receives an award from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Johns Hopkins awards a sub-contract to UCSD. You are required to follow all specific policies agreed to with Johns Hopkins, as well as all NIH and federal guidelines, including policies related to rebudgeting, expense transfers, and prior approvals.

Funds in the following fund ranges are federal flow-through awards:

Fund range Description
18800–18899 (A-Z) State of California flow-through
20851–20899 (A-Z) City and county government flow-through
78000–79499 (A-Z)
81800–82999A
Other non-federal agency (private corporation, foundation, or university) flow-through
