Lockout/ Blockout Training

Summary: Learn about lockout/ blockout training for employees who may encounter hazardous energy sources or machinery that could become energized during the course of their work.

Lockout/ blockout (LOBO) practices ensure that all energy sources are disengaged or blocked, and that electrical sources are de-energized and locked in the "off" position during work or repair. Read UCSD's Lockout / Blockout Policy (PDF) for complete details.

Training requirements: Employees who directly operate, repair, or maintain equipment or machinery where unexpected energization could cause injury or death must receive LOBO training before beginning work.

Equipment or machinery affected includes, but is not limited to, those with any of the following energy sources:

  • Electrical
  • Hydraulic
  • Pneumatic
  • Mechanical
  • Thermal
  • Chemical
  • Nuclear

Training is available as needed. Contact EH&S General Safety, (858) 534-7513. Instruction time is 1 hour.

Topics covered during training include:

  • Regulating agencies and current regulations
  • UCSD's LOBO policy
  • Where and when LOBO must be used
  • Specific written procedures to follow
  • Sample LOBO tracking forms
  • Record-keeping requirements
