Safety Training for UCSD Medical Center Employees

Work in a patient care environment necessitates special training for UCSD Medical Center employees.

Individual supervisors must identify job-specific hazards and make sure their employees attend safety training appropriate to the type of work they perform.

Read about required and recommended safety training below:

Required training
Radiation SafetyRequired for work involving nuclear medicine (radioactive materials) and radiation-producing machines used for treatment and diagnosis.
  • Contact the Medical Center Safety Office, (619) 543-7575, to arrange radiation safety training specific to healthcare providers.
Laser Safety TrainingRequired for work involving Class 3B and 4 lasers.
  • Contact the EH&S laser safety officer, (858) 822-5524 or 534-6138, to schedule training for the specific type of device being used.
Hazardous Waste Training Required for employees who generate chemical waste from a research, shop, studio, or clinical setting.
  • Register for Hazardous Waste Training via Enrollment Central.
  • Contact the EH&S Environmental Management Facility to arrange customized group training.
Recommended training
Back Injury Prevention Recommended for healthcare providers who move or lift patients or heavy equipment.
Ergonomic Training Recommended for all Medical Center employees. For more information and self-help options:
Fire Extinguisher Training Recommended for employees working with hazardous materials, equipment, or processes associated with a high risk of fire.
  • Contact the EH&S safety training manager, (858) 822-5974, to borrow the 15-minute long training video.

If you have questions about required and recommended safety training for the kind of work you perform at UCSD Medical Center, contact the EH&S Medical Center Safety Office, (619) 543-7575. If the EH&S Medical Center Safety Office doesn't offer the training you need, other resources will be recommended.
