Safety Training Overview

Summary: Find out about required and recommended safety training, how to access it, record-keeping requirements, and supervisors' responsibilities.

UCSD's commitment to safety is stated in the Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP). Providing safety training, the responsibility of supervisors, is a major component.

Supervisors must do the following:

  • Identify job-specific hazards that employees under their direction may be subjected to in the course of their duties
  • Provide appropriate safety training, both required and recommended
  • Provide safety training at these times:
    • During a new employee's initial orientation
    • When major aspects of the job change or new materials or procedures are introduced
Read the Safety Training Checklist for Supervisors for details.

Required versus recommended training: Specific occupational safety training and documentation is required for many jobs by law or by UCSD. Other safety training, while not required, is strongly recommended to make sure employees know how to safely perform their work.

Use the Safety Training Directory, organized by work categories, to:

  • Learn about required and recommended training for the kind of work you perform
  • Access training schedules and registration information for regularly scheduled programs
  • Find out how to schedule customized training and group sessions tailored to the needs of the requesting group
  • Learn about resources for facilitating supervisor-led training

Record-keeping requirements: Departments must maintain safety training records. EH&S does not maintain individual employee training records.

Records of training programs completed via Enrollment Central can be obtained from these sources:

If it isn't documented, it didn't happen. County inspectors, Cal/OSHA, and other regulatory agencies require evidence of employee training (MyTraining training activity reports, certificates of completion) during their inspections. Departments are subject to and responsible for paying potential fines when training requirements are unmet.

If you have questions about required and recommended safety training for the kind of work you perform at UCSD, contact the EH&S safety training manager, (858) 822-5974. If EH&S doesn't offer the training you need, other resources will be recommended.
