The term "layoff" at UCSD applies to career positions only and includes two types of layoffs:
- Reduction in time (RIT): A career employee's appointment percentage is reduced.
- Layoff: A career employee's position is eliminated.
A reduction in time or layoff can be further defined as temporary or indefinite:
- In a temporary layoff/RIT:
- Only career employees are affected.
- The layoff/RIT period is less than four calendar months (120 days).
- The employee receives a written notice stating the effective date and expected duration.
- When possible, the written notice is issued at least 15 days before the effective date. (This time period varies by PPSM and/or collective bargaining agreements.
- Preferential rehire rights do not apply.
