Computer Monitor and Electronic Devices Disposal

Summary: Keep lead and other toxic metals out of UCSD trash by properly disposing of computer monitors, televisions, cell phones, and electronic devices.

It's illegal to throw away computer monitors, televisions, cell phones, and electronic devices in the regular trash. Federal and state regulations require they be disposed of as hazardous waste because they contain significant amounts of lead, copper, and other toxic metals that, if placed in landfills, can contaminate soil and groundwater.

Cell phone disposal: Return your unwanted mobile phone to the service provider it was acquired from. When that is not possible, use either a cell phone collection bin on campus or the Campus Mail.

  • Cell phone bins are located at:
    • Price Center Bookstore
    • SIO Library
    • College Residential Life Offices
  • For collection via Campus Mail, address the package to "Used Cell Phone." No mail code is needed.

To dispose of monitors, televisions, and other electronic devices owned by UCSD, read and follow instructions on How to Send Non-Inventorial Property to Surplus Sales.

Electronic devices that must be disposed of as hazardous waste include:

  • Televisions and monitors, including cathode ray tubes (CRTs), plasma screens, and liquid crystal displays (LCDs)
  • Any electronic device
  • Computers and computer peripherals
  • Telephones, cell phones, and answering machines
  • Radios, stereo equipment, and phonographs
  • Tape players and recorders
  • Video cassette players and recorders
  • Compact disc players and recorders
  • Calculators
  • Some appliances, including microwaves

Residents on campus and in affiliated campus housing will find information for the proper disposal of privately owned computers and other electronic waste on the following Web sites:

If you are a UCSD employee and have questions, contact the EH&S Environmental Management Facility, (858) 534-2753.

Notice: Disposal of hazardous waste using sinks, intentional evaporation, or as regular trash is against the law. Campus laboratories must abide by strict state and federal waste disposal requirements. You may be held liable for violations of applicable laws.
