Ergonomics: Workplace Evaluations

Summary: Learn about procedures for obtaining an ergonomic workplace assessment.

In an ergonomic evaluation, an observer assesses your workplace layout, tasks, habits, and procedures. After the evaluation, the assessor offers recommendations for improvements.

Ergonomic evaluations are recommended for employees with 1 or more of the following risk factors:

  • 4 or more hours per day working at a computer
  • Any kind of repetitive motion (the same movement over and over again)
  • Holding the same posture for prolonged periods of time
  • Routine lifting and bending
  • Pain or discomfort associated with the job's physical requirements

Procedures for obtaining an ergonomic evaluation are different for computer workers and non-computer workers.

Computer workers:

  • Departments provide the initial assessment and training.
    • Use the online Evaluating Your Computer Workstation for Comfort and Productivity tutorial in conjunction with the Computer Ergonomic Review Tool (PDF) (Word) to learn basic ergonomic principles and how to set up a computer workstation.
    • Your supervisor must complete the Computer Ergonomic Review Tool which is designed to isolate and solve specific causes of discomfort.
  • Tier 2 evaluation: If the Computer Ergonomic Review Tool's recommendations and associated equipment changes don't alleviate any of the above risk factors, request a Tier 2 Computer Ergonomic Evaluation with an ergonomics specialist by doing the following:
    • Send a request for a workstation evaluation to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S):
      • E-mail: ehsih@ucsd.edu
        Mail Code: 0958
    • Include the following information:
      • A copy of the employee's completed Computer Ergonomic Review Tool
      • Questions or issues associated with the workstation configuration

Non-computer workers:

If your main job duties don't involve computer work, send a request to EH&S to ehsih@ucsd.edu or Mail Code 0958. Include:

  • Your name
  • Your supervisor's name
  • Building and room number
  • Phone number
  • E-mail address
  • Any questions or issues associated with the workstation configuration

If you are a UCSD employee and have questions, contact an ergonomics specialist.
