Recycling and Waste Management

Summary: Learn how recycling and managing waste conserves natural resources and how you can help.

With its goal of becoming a zero waste campus by 2020, UC San Diego manages a comprehensive waste diversion and recycling program.

Facilities Management supports a single-bin recycling program that allows all designated recyclables to be placed in any campus recycling container, including office bins.

In 2007, Facilities Management and Environmental Health & Safety sent 5,949 tons of trash to local landfills and diverted 3,234 tons of waste to achieve a 36% diversion rate. The following materials, reported in tons, were diverted from landfills:

  • 1,191 single-stream recyclables
  • 1,269 organics (grass clippings and mulched tree trimmings)
  • 75 electronic waste
  • 12 universal waste
  • 127 scrap metal
  • 484 scrap wood and greens
  • 56 concrete
  • 19 dirt

Note: Diverted waste does not include waste and recycled materials from medical centers contracted to another vendor, construction and demolition recycling, office furniture and equipment sent to Surplus Sales, and charitable donations made by Housing, Dining, & Hospitality.

Find out how you can help sustainability efforts at UCSD.

If you have questions about recycling, see Sustainability Contacts or contact the Facilities Management Customer Relations Service Referral Desk, (858) 534-2930.
