San Diego depends primarily on imported water for domestic and industrial uses. In July 1989, the San Diego City Council adopted the Water Reclamation Ordinance, regulating the use of reclaimed water. UCSD supports this ordinance by using reclaimed water for campus irrigation.
UCSD's use of reclaimed water means it is more self-sufficient during drought conditions, measurably reducing regional use of scarce potable water resources.
