General Lab Safety and Chemical Safety Training  
 
Summary: Learn how to access required and recommended laboratory and chemical safety training.


Individual principal investigators and supervisors must identify job-specific hazards and make sure their employees attend safety training appropriate to the type of work they perform.

Read about required and recommended safety training below.

Required training
Laboratory Safety Principles/ Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) Required for all laboratory employees. This course covers general safety and laboratory hazardous waste issues.

Note: LSP/IIPP training is recommended for anyone working in a laboratory or other high-hazard environment, regardless of payroll status.
Annual Hazardous Materials Training for Laboratory Personnel Required annually as a refresher course for employees who work with hazardous materials in the lab and generate hazardous chemical waste.

First-time training: If you have not yet completed formal training in safely handling hazardous materials, you must attend Laboratory Safety Principles/IIPP before you are eligible to take the annual refresher course below.

Air-Purifying Respirator Required for anyone who uses an air-purifying respirator.

Recommended training
Assessing Chemical Hazards Recommended for all lab workers.
  • Contact the EH&S safety training manager, (858) 822-5974, to schedule a custom training session.
Controlled Substances Recommended for researchers to learn how to use controlled substances in compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
Hazardous Waste Training Recommended for anyone who generates chemical waste.
Fire Extinguisher Training Recommended for employees working with hazardous materials, equipment, or processes associated with a high risk of fire.
Potentially Explosive Chemical Handling Recommended for anyone who works with or who may come in contact with potentially explosive chemicals.
  • Contact the EH&S Environmental Management Facility, (858) 534-9695, to schedule a custom training session.
Area Safety Coordinator Orientation Recommended for those who oversee safety and compliance in a UCSD research facility. This training is presented upon request.
  • Contact the EH&S Research Assistance Program manager to schedule a custom training session.

Laboratory Ergonomics Recommended for researchers whose work involves prolonged periods of pipetting, microscopy work, dissection, or other repetitive procedures.
New Principal Investigator (PI) Orientation Recommended for PIs new to UCSD. Training presented as needed.
  • Contact Environment, Health & Safety, (858) 534-5366, to schedule a custom training session.
UC Vehicles Driver Responsibility Recommended for all drivers of UC-owned vehicles. Training is available by two methods:
  • Attend regularly scheduled training presented by Fleet Services on the second Tuesday of each month. Contact Fleet Services, (858) 534-3485, to register.
    OR
  • Schedule custom training: Contact EH&S Risk Management, (858) 534-3820.
Dealing with Emergencies at UCSD Recommended for all employees who wish to learn about basic preparedness procedures and resources, or their department's role in UCSD's Emergency Operations Plan.
