Types of vehicle insurance
UC's self-insurance program offers departments several by-request liability and physical damage insurance programs for UCSD-owned vehicles. Some vehicle insurance is mandatory; other programs are optional when additional coverage is prudent.
Be aware of these facts when determining insurance coverage for your department:
Rental: Rental vehicle insurance requires use of a current UC contract number with the proper rental agency. Read Rental Car Insurance Coverage for complete details.
Personal: Personnel vehicles used for university business are not covered for damage or loss by university insurance programs. Read Personal Vehicle Usage for UCSD Business for more detailed information.
Department-owned or UC leased vehicles: Your department must obtain coverage for department-owned or UC leased vehicles. Fleet Services vehicles are routinely insured by Fleet Services. Read about mandatory and optional vehicle insurance programs below.
Mandatory UC vehicle insurance
- Vehicle liability insurance: The premium is a yearly charge calculated by combining UC experience (the base premium) and department experience (any surcharge). Base premiums for 2007-2008 were:
- Passenger vehicles: $206.77
- Trucks: $385.57
- Motorscooters: $53.61
- Motorcycles: $107.23
- Electric vehicles: $45.02
- Note: As of July 1, 1998, a deductible of $500 applies per accident, plus 20% of claim costs up to $25,000.
Optional UC vehicle insurance
- Auto physical damage: The premium is a yearly charge and is calculated by UC experience. Premiums for 2007-2008 were:
- $85 with $500 deductible per occurrence
- Excess physical damage: This is for vehicles valued at more than $25,000. The premium is a yearly charge calculated by UC experience. Premiums for 2007-2008 were:
- 39 cents per $100 of value over $25,000
- Note: Physical damage insurance on a totaled vehicle pays only the current Blue Book value.
