How to Pay a Participant in a Study

Summary: Use these step-by-step instructions to request a payment to compensate a human subject when the payment is made directly to the participant, and when strict confidentiality is not required.

Note: When confidentiality is required, Scrip is the preferred payment method for paying clinical trial participants, especially when there are many participants and the exact payment dates are not known.
What to do How to do it
1 Gather information.
  1. You'll need the following information in Step 2:
    • Participant's Financial Identification Number (FID)
    • Participant's name
    • Participant's mailing address
    • Participant's home address (if different from mailing address)
    • Protocol number or study title
Note: The Financial Identification Number (FID) is assigned after a Social Security number is provided to Disbursements when the first payment is made to this participant. It is required because this type of payment is reportable as income.

2 Request payment.
  1. Follow the payment authorization instructions for Payment Authorization online.
Note: To use Payment Authorization online, you must first complete the Payment Authorization class through Staff Education.
