Determine if the candidate is already qualified to be a PI or co-PI. |
- Appointments in the following titles are automatically qualified to be a PI or co-PI:
- Professors (all ranks)
- Professors in residence (all ranks)
- Professors of clinical _____ (all ranks except instructor)
- Research professors
- Emeritus professors
- Senior lecturers
- Lecturers with Security of Employment
- University librarian
- Registrar and chief admissions officer
- Vice chancellors
- Chancellor
- See a complete list of qualified title codes.
Note: If the candidate title qualifies, you do not need to request an exception.

Gather information you'll need to fill out the form. |
- UCSD proposal number
- A curriculum vita or bio-bibliography
- A two- to three-sentence description of the proposed research
- A letter from the administering academic department or organized research unit that includes the following:
- How will the project or program contribute to the "basic academic plan" and/or research programs of the department or organized research unit?
- What are the qualifications of the candidate to undertake the proposed project or program?
- How has the candidate demonstrated strong potential for conducting independent research?
- If the candidate is to be the sole PI, why is a regular faculty or research scientist not acting as co-PI?
- What are the plans for the future appointment status of the candidate?
- Does adequate space exist within the unit for the project?
- If less than 100% salary is being proposed for the candidate, what fund source will provide the remaining support?
- What fund sources will provide support services (e.g., secretarial, supplies, telephone) if the proposal is not funded?
- What are the future plans for the candidate if the proposal isn't funded?

Fill out and submit the form. |
- Download and fill out the PI Exception Form (PDF) (Excel).
- Have the department chair or Organized Research Unit (ORU) director sign the form.
- Submit the signed exception form and attachments you gathered in Step 2 to:
- General campus: Research Affairs, Mail Code 0043
- Health Sciences: Sponsored Projects Office, Mail Code 0742
- Scripps Institution of Oceanography: Associate dean for academic affairs, Mail Code 0244
- Research Affairs will forward notification of approval to the PI, the department, and OCGA.
