Creating an Endowed Chair (General Campus)

Who takes action Action to take
1 Deans
  1. Work with their divisional development officers to propose an endowed chair and execute the gift agreement
2 Donor Stewardship Office
  1. Drafts a letter proposing the endowed chair with input from the divisional dean. The letter:
    • Explains how the proposed endowed chair fits into the academic plan for the division
    • Serves as a proposal to establish and name an endowed chair
  2. Obtains the signature of the divisional dean on the proposal letter
  3. Sends the original, signed letter to the senior vice chancellor for Academic Affairs
3 Senior vice chancellor for Academic Affairs (SVCAA)
  1. Forwards the proposal to the Academic Senate chair
4 Academic Senate chair
  1. Determines if the proposal will be reviewed by Committee on Educational Policy (CEP) or the Graduate Council
  2. Sends a copy of the proposal to:
    • The Senate Committee on Academic Personnel (as an informational item only)
    • Either CEP or the Graduate Council (as determined in Step 3a above)
5 Academic Senate Committe on Educational Policy (CEP)
OR
Graduate Council
  1. Evaluates the proposal
  2. If approved, sends its recommendation to the senior vice chancellor for Academic Affairs (SVCAA) with copies to:
    • Academic Senate chair
    • Academic Senate vice-chair
    • Senate Committee on Academic Personnel (CAP)
    • CEP or Graduate Council
  3. If not approved, sends a letter to the SVCAA
6 Senior vice chancellor for Academic Affairs (SVCAA)
  1. Sends the original, approved proposal to the Donor Stewardship Office
  2. Sends copies of the proposal to:
    • Divisional dean
    • Department chair (if applicable)
    • Assistant vice chancellor for Academic Affairs
    • Director of development for Academic Affairs
    • Academic Personnel Office (APO)
7 Donor Stewardship Office
  1. Obtains the chancellor's signature on the proposal
  2. Finalizes the proposal
  3. Sends the proposal to the Office of the President
8 UC president
  1. Signs the proposal, if it is approved
  2. Returns the approved proposal to UCSD Administrative Records
The appointment process (see Step 10) can begin after approval by the UC president.

9 Administrative Records
  1. Sends copies of the approved proposal to the:
    • Chancellor
    • SVCAA
    • Vice chancellor for External Relations
10 Senior vice chancellor of Academic Affairs
  1. Sends a copy of the approved proposal to the:
    • Academic Personnel Office (APO)
    • Divisional dean
    • Department chair (if applicable)
11 Vice chancellor for External Relations
  1. Sends a copy to the:
    • Donor Stewardship Office
    • Director of development for Academic Affairs
