Creating an Endowed Chair (School of Medicine)

Who takes action Action to take
1 School of Medicine (SOM) dean
  1. Works with SOM Development officer to propose an endowed chair and execute the gift agreement
2 Donor Stewardship Office
  1. Drafts a letter with input from the vice chancellor for Health Sciences, the dean, and the SOM Development Office. The letter:
    • Explains how the proposed endowed chair fits into the academic plan for the department or school
    • Serves as a proposal to establish and name an endowed chair
  2. Obtains the vice chancellor for Health Sciences' signature on the proposal letter
  3. Sends the original, signed letter to the School of Medicine (SOM) Committee on Educational Policy (CEP).
  4. Sends copies of the proposal letter to the:
    • Dean
    • Chair for the Academic Senate
    • Academic Personnel Office (APO)
3 School of Medicine (SOM) Committee on Educational Policy (CEP)
  1. Evaluates the proposal
  2. If approved, CEP sends its recommendation to the vice chancellor for Health Sciences
  3. If not approved, CEP sends a letter to the vice chancellor for Health Sciences with a copy to the dean
4 Vice chancellor for Health Sciences
  1. Sends the original, approved proposal to the Central Campus Development Office.
  2. Sends copies of the proposal to the:
    • Dean
    • Senior vice chancellor for Academic Affairs (SVCAA)
    • SOM Development Office
    • Donor Stewardship Office
    • Senate Committee on Academic Personnel (CAP)
    • APO
    • Department chair (if the endowed chair is attached to a particular department)
5 Donor Stewardship Office
  1. Obtains the chancellor's signature on the proposal
  2. Finalizes the proposal
  3. Sends the proposal to the Office of the President
6 UC president
  1. Signs the proposal, if it is approved
  2. Returns the approved proposal to UCSD Administrative Records
The appointment process (see Step 10) can begin after approval by the UC president.

7 Administrative Records
  1. Sends copies of the approved proposal to the:
    • Chancellor
    • SVCAA
    • Vice chancellor for External Relations
    • Vice chancellor for Health Sciences.
8 Senior vice chancellor of Academic Affairs
  1. Sends a copy of the approved proposal to the Academic Personnel Office (APO)
9 Vice chancellor for External Relations
  1. Sends a copy to Donor Stewardship.
10 Vice chancellor for Health Sciences
  1. Sends copies to the dean and the SOM Development Office.
