Who's eligible? Any faculty, staff, or student who commutes to campus and doesn't currently hold an annual parking permit can participate in the Transit/ Coaster Club.
What are the benefits?
  • Receive 2 months free: New members receive their 1st and 12th month free (based on 12 consecutive months of participation).
  • Enjoy discount passes: Receive $20 off MTS and NCTD posted monthly passes, and $15 off Coaster monthly passes.
  • Maintain flexibility: Members requiring flexibility in their commuting schedule will get an Occasional Use permit worth 10 complimentary days of parking per quarter.
  • Use Flexcar for free: Receive free Flexcar registration and 3 hours of free Flexcar use per month (when you meet UCSD eligibility requirements.
  • Receive up to 3 courtesy rides per year: If you become ill, must work unscheduled overtime, or experience a family emergency, you can request a guaranteed ride home. To receive this benefit, Transit/ Coaster Club members should join the Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) program.
How does the Transit/ Coaster Club work? Members are off-campus residents who:
  • Commit to riding public transportation daily
  • Purchase one of the following monthly passes:
    • North County Transit or
    • Metropolitan Transit System or
    • Coaster train
  • Register with the Transit/ Coaster Club at the Gilman or Medical Center Hillcrest Parking Office.
What does it cost?

Note: Prices reflect UCSD discount.

Transit/ Coaster Club registration is free. Members are responsible for paying monthly transit fees:
  • North County bus pass: $34
  • San Diego County bus pass (Urban): $44
    • Student (monthly): $31.50
    • Student (quarterly): $47 (not available for summer)
  • San Diego County bus pass (Express): $44
  • San Diego County bus pass (Senior/ Disabled): Free*
  • North County Coaster passes:
    • Zone 2: $111
    • Zone 3: $127
    • Zone 4: $139
    • Senior/ Disabled: $23.50 (all zones)*
  • Coaster fare structure
* Must present proof of status to receive this pass.
How do I participate?
  • Purchase your monthly transit pass. You can purchase bus or Coaster passes at the following locations:
    • Campus Parking Office Gilman Parking Structure Rideshare desk (map), 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays
    • Medical Center Hillcrest Parking Office, Bachman Parking Structure (map), 6:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., weekdays
    • Coaster stations (Coaster passes only)
    • Payroll deduction: Faculty and staff may purchase transit passes via payroll deduction on a pretax basis. To purchase by payroll deduction, complete the Transit Pass Payroll Authorization/ Cancellation Form (Word file) and return it by the 15th day of the preceding month to one of the following:
      • Campus Rideshare Operations, fax (858) 534-3043, Mail Code 0011
      • Bachman Parking Office at Medical Center Hillcrest, fax (619) 543-3358, Mail Code 8205
      You can pick your passes up at your designated parking office on the 27th day of the preceding month.
  • Bring to registration:
    • Valid UCSD ID
    • Bus or Coaster pass(es)
  • Register for the Transit/ Coaster Club at one of the following locations within the first 6 weeks of the quarter:
    • Campus Parking Office, Rideshare desk, Gilman Parking Structure (map), 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays
    • Bachman Parking Office at Medical Center Hillcrest (map), 6:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. weekdays
  • Pick up your complimentary Occasional Use parking permit at the Campus or Medical Center Hillcrest Parking Office. You will need:
    • Valid UCSD ID
    • Proof of current vehicle registration for up to 2 vehicles. (Vehicles must be registered to you or a family member at a single address.)
How do I use my Occasional Use permit?

Note: Violation of these policies may result in:

  • Parking citations
  • 6-month suspension from the Transit/ Coaster Club
  • Ineligibility to participate in any Rideshare programs for up to 6 months

Occasional Use permits issued by Rideshare Operations:
  • Are used in the same way as those purchased from the Parking Office. Please review How to Display Your Parking Permit.
  • Are non-transferable. Only the member who is issued the permit can use it. The permit cannot be shared, sold, or given away.
  • Are valid in designated spaces. For accepted spaces, read Where and When to Park.
