Asbestos is any of several naturally occuring fibrous minerals once added to a variety of products, such as insulation, for heat and chemical resistance. Asbestos fibers have been implicated as causes of certain cancers. Because long-term exposure to asbestos fibers is a known health hazard, it has been strictly regulated in building and other industries since the mid-1970s.
See the Environmental Protection Agency's Asbestos home page for more information. |
