LC50 (lethal concentration 50) is the amount of a gas, vapor, mist, fume, or dust in the air that will kill 50% of a sample population when inhaled over a set amount of time. LD50 (lethal concentration 50) is a similar term used for solids and liquids.
LC50 and LD50 are widely reported and used to measure the potential toxicity of chemicals. Note: LC50 and similar values are comparable only when the age, sex, and nutritional state of the animals in the sample population are specified. In full reporting, the dose, treatment, and observation period should be given. |
