     After graduating from the
 University of Edinburgh,
 Scotland, I spent a year at
 UCSD as a Fulbright scholar
 in linguistics in 1984. After
 completing my studies I
 returned to Scotland and
 worked as a
 telecommunications planning
 analyst at the Royal Bank of
 Scotland, moving back to San
 Diego 1989 to take a job in
 UCSD's Telecommunications
 Services Department.
